Introducing Morgan Johnson
Morgan grew up on a dairy farm where her parents bred Friesian cows. She says it’s always been her passion, and so she left school and got into farming straight away. She moved to Canterbury around 2005 and once she met her husband, they managed farms and contract milked.
Eventually they worked their way up to 50/50 sharemilking a 570-cow herd in the area. “We were working towards a Friesian herd, but I did have a splash of Brown Swiss in there because I really think they are beautiful, big soft cows. Our herd was still at the point where there was a bit of a mix in there, but we were aiming for Friesian.”
Morgan explains that working at Samen NZ as a breeding consultant is a win-win for her. “I get to be back in the industry. I get to talk to other passionate farmers and look at lots of cows and hopefully build something out of it,” she explains. “A standout cow to me would be a cow that’s not too tall, definitely good capacity, nice high udder, good temperament, health and fertility.
Pretty much everything we were breeding for.” More than anything, Morgan loves watching herds progress. “It’s exciting to also talk to other farmers. It’s cool helping others achieve goals with their herds, and we’ve got some really exciting bulls coming through that’ll definitely do that.”
